Diving Officer's Report

I survived the jungle and had a great time diving off Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai. The diving was certainly world class and I saw more different and unusual critters than I have seen anywhere before. I was enthralled by everything from leopard sharks to the tiny but incredibly beautiful mandarin fish. Can you imagine what it is like to be excitedly spotting all these wonderful creatures and to have your dive interrupted by a loud bang? The appalling truth is that dynamite fishing still takes place. Sipadan and Mabul seem safe for now but some of the sites are completely devoid of fish. Dynamite fishing is illegal but policing is insufficient. Dynamite fishing destroys not only all the fish but the corals as well. On one dive the waters were crystal clear – clear of everything – not a fish was left except a few dead ones lying on the bottom. Amazingly some of the macro life was still there but without the corals, they will not last long. On several dives we heard the bangs. The liveaboard we were on keeps having to abandon its previously beautiful sites when they discover the destruction. As divers we must do everything we can to try and stop this. I have written to Greenpeace and intend to write to the Malaysian Government. In one of the hotels, shark fin soup was on the menu. I complained to the management and informed them that I would never stay there again unless they stopped serving it. Such action might seem laughable, but if every person who has ever donned scuba gear did the same, we just might make a difference.

Kate.

A policy needs to be put into place regarding octopush going on trips etc. Gary is going to speak to Karen and see what needs to be put in place.

9.

Dive Planning and Marshalling

There seems to be a big issue regarding dive planning and marshalling. There is a huge gap between BSAC policy and what happens in the club.

Several issues have been raised. What constitutes a club dive? Who is qualified to be a dive Marshall? What should we do about surface cover? Can a skipper be classed as surface cover?

Ray and Pete are going to distribute the dive leader notes for dive planning and marshalling to the committee. This will be discussed next meeting when everyone has had a chance to read up BSAC policy and maybe form a sub-committee to deal with this issue.
