Diving Officer's Report
What an event it was on Boxing Day! Not only
did 16 divers turn up to face the Acrtic
conditions but some brave supporters
standing watching in the snow. We were also
joined by Paul Rayner who was evidently a
member of our club nearly 50 years ago and
was enjoying his 70th birthday on
Boxing Day. He said that seeing so many
members of BSAC18 still continuing the
tradition was the best birthday present he
could have had. He enjoyed chatting with us
and telling us about some of his amazing
experiences. I still wish we could still see
the wrecks the way they must have looked
back then but I began to realise that it was
divers like Paul and his fellow club members
who actually did most of the pillaging. He
took great delight in describing all the
parts they removed from wrecks like the
Hispania. I took pleasure in telling him
about some more recent members returning the
parts from the Brummer to the museum at
Scapa Flow.
We had managed our weekend before Christmas
trip to St Abbs and had two dives on the
Saturday. The viz was terrible and the surge
was powerful in places but we all had a good
time. The only equipment failure was my own
apart from one or two freeflows. All good
experience.
My suggestion for 2005 is.. get any
equipment serviced that needs doing in good
time. Don’t wait until the first trip of the
year to try it out. So often regulators and
things play up after servicing and it’s
better to discover the problem at Capernwray
than in the North Sea.
My final thought is about the tsunami. I
know that every member of this club will
have been deeply shocked by all the news and
wondered whether any divers were lost. As
far as I know from people like Tony
Backhurst, all his customers have been
accounted for but obviously there are still
a lot of people missing. How easily any of
us could have been on holiday out there.
Makes you appreciate every day how lucky you
are to be alive.
Hope you enjoy lots of good diving in 2005.
