Apologies

  • Trish
  • All other committee members present
  • Also present, Richard Manning, Diane, Neil Thackery

2.

Matters Arising

  • Sports Centre Arrangements
    •  Pete confirmed that the prices quoted at last months meeting were now confirmed and that this resulted in a real price increase of approximately £27.00 per week.
    • Andy Briggs had provided the compressor risk assessment and the Sports Centre have now provided the location risk assessments so Ray, Dave and Helen will now commence work on our risk assessment
    • It was confirmed that our status meant that we didn’t have to pay VAT but Richard also confirmed that the Sports Centre had not been charging VAT either
    • Richard suggested that the increase in fees could be recovered by;
      • An increase in annual subs to all members (£5.00 for diving members and £3.00 for snorkel members)
      • An increase in the initial fees charged to new members requiring training from £175.00 to £210
      • The committee agreed to consider these increases and to come to a decision at the next meeting
  • Compressor – Is still awaiting reinstallation pending the Sports Centre agreement to our risk assessment (above)
  • Instructor Training – No action
  • Dive Marshalling Sheet – No action….Dave Colley to forward sheet to Stewart for inclusion onto the web site
  • Dive Marshalling Training – Martin has volunteered his time to conduct the training for all those interested.  It was suggested that the theory training could take place over a couple of Monday evenings to keep costs down.  Martin asked for a minimum of 6 trainees and the more the merrier – contact Sarah with your interest
  • Dive Marshalling – Pete distributed copies of the ‘Dive Safety’ booklet containing ‘cross organisation’ (i.e., BSAC, PADI, etc) agreements on broad principles for dive marshalling.  Kate and all to review and consider adopting at next meeting
  • Minutes – Andy Booth is now providing a copy of the meeting minutes on the desk and at the pub.
  • H & S and Manual Handling and Training Mentorship – Dave Colley has now written to Neil in reply to the points raised.  Neil will comment as applicable

Diving Officer's Report

  • This month’s report is about two of our members. One, who I shan’t name in case he wants to remain anonymous, suffered a DCI. Fortunately, he recognised it, administered oxygen and contacted a doctor. The circumstances have been reported to BSAC and I have been able to look at the dive sheets to see if there was anything about the diving weekend that looked suspect. This, for me, was an instance of the importance of handing in dive sheets. Not that there was anything untoward apart from the very poor visibility and people coming up at different times from their buddies. It seemed to be one of those inexplicable incidents, when everything was done according to the book, but the diver’s body thought otherwise. It is hard to learn from this – we don’t know what to put right. Maybe the lesson to learn is to be like this diver was- vigilant. Don’t dismiss those aches and pains, be brave enough to admit what’s happening and get the right treatment.
  • The second person shall be named – if you haven’t already read his letter in Dive. Andy Booth was diving at Stoney Cove and there was an incident. A diver had a serious problem at the surface and Andy helped with the rescue and resuscitation until help arrived. Andy was full of praise for the Stoney Cove staff but I think we should praise Andy for recognising what was happening and putting some of his training into action. We should all keep our rescue skills up to scratch. Well done Andy.

Kate Falkingham, Diving Officer

Training Officers Report

  • A number of trainees are progressing well with several moving onto open water
  • Dave has issued a memo to all trainees requesting notice when they will be unable to attend and it appears to be having the trick
  • Sports Diver training will be commencing in the next few weeks and all interested parties should let Dave know as soon as possible.

6.

Treasurer's Report

  • Richard was unable to provide a summary although the bank statement was healthy with about half of the balance known to be due for payments
  • A full summary will be made available at the next meeting

7.

Equipment Officer's Report

  • Two BC’s are due for repair
  • Andy is trying to get new cylinder labels (for test date, etc) but they are proving expensive at the moment
  • Andy is still running back and forth filling cylinders as and when needed

8.

Club constitution regarding Juniors (G Exton)

  • It was stated that at a committee meeting within the last couple of years, the committee decided that our club would not take any trainee under the age of 16 due to the various Child Protection implication and the high degree of risk it places the instructors under.  For instance, it was pointed out that the Controlled Buoyant Lift procedure involved a necessary element of physical contact with the trainee, and that even with parents present, this carried an element of risk to the instructor for future allegation (whether founded or not).
  • However, after a lengthy debate, it was agreed to ask Martin to attend next months meeting and provide BSAC HQ views, etc (Sarah to invite).

9.

Octopush T-Shirts update (S Churchman)

  • Dave Colley has the design and did get a quote and will update the situation at the next meeting

10.

BSAC18 50th Celebrations (A Waugh)

  • Andy kindly volunteered to head up a sub committee to consider options for the 50th Celebration.  Please forward all suggestions to him
  • Steve and Diane had made a suggestion that all divers to make more than 50 dives in our 50th year (between the 2004 AGM and 2005 AGM) should be presented with a t-shirt

11.

Laser Printer for membership sec (A Booth)

  • The committee agreed to fund a laser printer for the membership secretary.  (Staples are selling Samsung laser printers for under £60.00 and Richard will look into this at Dixons)

12.

Paying-in book and cheque book for membership officer (Andy Booth)

  • Richard and Andy agreed to discuss this situation away from the meeting and report back with their conclusions at next months meeting

13.

WWF Big Swim event (Dave Colley)

  • Dave informed the group of this fund raising event and suggested that we could look to participate to raise awareness for the Dolphins and for our club – please contact Dave with fund raising ideas
