Diving Officer's Report
Safety issues
continue to hit the headlines. According to this month’s Diver
magazine, “Diving Officers the length and breadth of the country are
quaking in their neoprene boots”. I ask myself, “Should I be?”.
Many of us read the article in the local paper about the ruling
regarding the incident at St Abbs when a diver with the Seadog group
lost his life. A verdict of “misadventure” was given but there was a
lot of criticism of the organisation of the dive. The dive site was
deemed to be not suitable for inexperienced divers. Anyone who has
been to St Abbs and knows the sites in question would have to question
this judgement. Our club regularly uses St Abbs and recommends it as
an ideal place for divers getting their first taste of sea diving.
However, even the safest sites are dependent on the conditions. We
went up last weekend and the sea was too rough to dive. Our excellent
skipper, Billy, knew that it was too risky and we went walking
instead. One boat did go out and several people were shore diving.
Anyone who goes out in unsuitable conditions is putting their own and
their buddy’s lives at risk and now there is the extra problem of
blame falling on the club. There is always another day and diving can
wait. Your Dive Marshall on a trip will decide, with the boat skipper,
whether it is safe to dive. If you are off diving away from the club
please -Do the “Risk assessment” that we keep hearing about and act
sensibly.

-
It was stressed that Dive
Marshalling needs to be focussed on and more effort needs to be
placed to ensure our Club Dive Marshalling is performed to the
letter.
-
It was agreed that the Dive
Marshalling responsibilities should be re-stressed - Diving Officer
to communicate these responsibilities to all when approving future
dives
-
It was suggested that the
dive sheets should be changed to reflect planned dive time - Dave
Colley to prepare new Dive Marshalling Sheet and will provide
-
Pete, Kate and Andy Briggs
to attend Dive Planning and Marshalling SDC on the 20/21st Sept and
will prepare an 'bullet point sheet' for Dive Marshalls
